Forex lot size
Family III · Risk
Not to be confused with lot, lot sizes, position size.
Forex lot size is the standardized quantity of a currency pair traded in the foreign exchange market. It determines the monetary value of each pip movement and the overall exposure of a position. Common classifications include standard, mini, micro, and nano lots, each representing a fixed number of base currency units.
Standard Lot Classifications
Forex lot sizes are typically categorized as follows:
- Standard lot: 100,000 units of the base currency.
- Mini lot: 10,000 units.
- Micro lot: 1,000 units.
- Nano lot: 100 units, offered by some brokers.
These classifications are not universal; some brokers may use different unit amounts or offer only a subset. The lot size directly affects the pip value, which is the monetary amount gained or lost per pip movement.
Calculating Pip Value from Lot Size
For most currency pairs, a pip is 0.0001. The pip value for a standard lot is calculated by multiplying the lot size by the pip size. For example, for EUR/USD, a standard lot (100,000 units) yields a pip value of 100,000 × 0.0001 = 10 units of the quote currency (USD).
For a mini lot, the pip value would be 10,000 × 0.0001 = 1 USD; for a micro lot, 1,000 × 0.0001 = 0.10 USD. These values are in the quote currency and may require conversion if the account currency differs.
Variations and Considerations
Lot size definitions and available increments vary by broker and regulatory jurisdiction. Some brokers allow trading in fractional lots, while others restrict to specific multiples. Additionally, the pip value calculation assumes the quote currency is the account currency; if not, conversion using the current exchange rate is necessary. Traders should verify the contract specifications provided by their broker.
