Vps service

Family XII · Other terms

Not to be confused with forex vps, vps forex.

VPS service is a rented virtual machine, usually located in a data centre, on which a trader installs and runs a trading platform. The server stays powered on and connected to the internet continuously, so automated strategies and open positions are not interrupted by local power, hardware or connectivity failures. Latency between the server and the broker's execution servers depends on the physical distance between the two, which is why providers offer locations near major trading data centres.

What the service provides

A VPS service supplies a virtualised operating system, typically Windows, with a fixed allocation of CPU, RAM and disk space, plus a network connection. The trader accesses it remotely and installs the same platform used locally, such as MetaTrader or cTrader, along with any expert advisors or scripts.

Specifications, pricing, operating systems and available server locations vary by provider and by plan, and are not standardised across the industry.

Latency and location

Execution speed is governed mainly by the round-trip time between the VPS and the broker's server. A server in the same data centre as the broker's matching engine can reduce that time to a few milliseconds, while a server on another continent may add tens or hundreds of milliseconds.

Because brokers host their servers in different cities, the correct VPS location depends on where the account is hosted. Traders commonly check the broker's server address before choosing a provider location.

Worked example: latency effect on a fill

ROUND-TRIP LATENCY AND PRICE MOVEMENT
Local connection round-trip180 ms0.180 s
VPS in same data centre4 ms0.004 s
Price drift during local round-trip0.180 s x 2.0 points/s0.36 points
Price drift during VPS round-trip0.004 s x 2.0 points/s0.008 points

The example assumes a market moving at two points per second. The difference in slippage is a function of latency, not of the VPS product itself, and actual figures vary with instrument, volatility and broker infrastructure.

Operational considerations

A VPS service is not a managed trading service. The trader remains responsible for platform configuration, updates, security and monitoring. Providers differ in whether they allow multiple platforms, how they handle restarts, and what backup or snapshot facilities they offer.

Regulatory treatment, consumer protections and contract terms for VPS services vary by jurisdiction and provider, and no single set of rules applies worldwide.

Often confused with

forex vps
A forex VPS is a VPS service marketed specifically for currency trading, often pre-configured with a currency platform and located near a currency broker's servers; the visible sign is the product name and marketing focus on forex pairs rather than the underlying server technology.
vps forex
VPS forex is the same concept written in reversed word order, used as a search phrase or category label rather than a distinct product; the visible sign is the word order itself, with no difference in meaning from forex VPS.
