VPS for trading is a virtual private server (VPS) configured to host trading platforms such as MetaTrader, cTrader or proprietary terminals. It runs in a data centre, often chosen for proximity to broker servers, so that automated strategies and open positions remain active when the trader's own computer is switched off or disconnected. The service is typically rented monthly and may be offered by the broker or by an independent hosting provider.
How it works
A VPS is a virtual machine on a physical server. The user receives remote desktop access and installs the trading platform on it. Because the VPS is always on and connected, expert advisors, algorithmic strategies and pending orders continue to operate without interruption from local power cuts, internet outages or computer restarts.
Latency depends on the distance between the VPS data centre and the broker's execution servers. Providers often offer locations in major financial centres such as London, New York or Tokyo. The exact latency figure varies by provider, broker and location, and is not guaranteed.
Cost and specification
Pricing depends on the provider and the resources allocated. A basic plan may include 1–2 CPU cores, 2–4 GB RAM and 40–80 GB SSD storage. Higher tiers support more platforms or multiple terminals. Some brokers bundle a VPS free of charge if the client meets certain trading volume or deposit conditions; these conditions vary by broker and are subject to change.
Worked example
The example shows typical values; actual latency and uptime depend on the provider, the broker and the network path.
